Adventures in Tokyo

“How is it that you’re always able to get first class seats?” Meilin asked as she leaned back comfortably in her seat by the window. Her legs were stretched out nicely in front of her.
Kai was typing away on his laptop with his headphones on. She frowned at the lack of response and wondered what he was so immersed in. Leaning over she read the top of the document aloud.
“16th Annual Best Couple of Japan Contest Application? What!” she exclaimed in disbelief.
-----------------------------------
"Will we be going to Tomoeda after the week is up? I really want to see how Sakura-chan’s doing. They should be on summer break right now too.”
“I sent her a letter during the Spring and told her that Syaoran’s doing well,” Kai offered nonchalantly.
“Still, it must be hard for her.” Meilin sighed, eyes downcat. “She probably won’t ever see Syaoran again. Not when Elder Wutai’s in charge.”
“Ah, the curse of Li and Amamiya lineage. It’s like Lu Ryuuren and Amamiya Nadeshiko, isn’t it? Funny how the children unknowingly re-live the lives of their parents.” A nostalgic expression appeared on his face.
-----------------------------------
Sensing that something was wrong with Meilin, Kai immediately swam upwards. They floated on the water. Supporting her with his left arm, he patted her face. “Meilin! Meilin!”
Choking at the air that entered her lungs, Meilin’s eyes fluttered open and she gagged at the water in her system. She weakly muttered, “Did you get it?”
“You stupid girl! Stop being so stubborn!” he scolded, looking over with worried stormy-blue eyes. Something akin to fear pounded in his heart for a moment when he saw her go limp in the water.
-----------------------------------
The crowd ‘oohed’ and ‘ahhed’ as the birds flew around the large area and laughed when they perched themselves all over Kai. They all stood on his head, his shoulders, his outstretched arms and his forefingers. Slowly one by one, at his whistle, the doves left him and started circling on the stage. Eventually, all twelve were gliding in a circle. They twisted in random formations until there was a sudden explosion and Meilin took flight from the middle of it all like a phoenix rising from burning ashes.
-----------------------------------
Crossing the distance, he knelt in front of her and noticed the tears that clung to her dark eyelashes. The corners of his eyes softened a fraction and he moved his jacket to cover her shoulders. Meilin snuggled closer to the new warmth and muttered inaudibly in her sleep.
Laughing silently, he thought wryly, I guess that I won’t need to kidnap her from Hong Kong again.
Until late dawn, Kai contented himself by sitting at the foot of the chair, staring at Meilin’s sleeping form.
-----------------------------------
Kai grabbed the microphone and cleared his throat. “Miho, if you’re watching this program somewhere out there! Onii-chan is back! Did you get my birthday present? I love you, Miho-chan~”
“Who the heck is Miho-chan?” muttered that shocked audience members. “Right after winning the Best Couple Contest, why is he professing his love on national television for another girl?”
Meilin fumed. “Idiot” Grabbing the microphone out of Kai’s hands, she bonked him on the head with it. “I told you I didn’t want to do this!”
“Miho-chan! Wait for me!” cried out Kai towards the camera.
“This is not what I had in mind when I told you that you need to apologize to your little sister,” snapped Meilin.
